Every UltraGirl, in Order of First Appearance

Six characters on the UltraGirls roster carry the same name. They come from four comics publishers, a Japanese manga and an independent short film. Put in the order they first appeared, they cover thirty-five years.

1983: Christine Kelly, Big Bang Comics

The first UltraGirl appeared in Megaton #1 in 1983, the first issue of Gary Carlson’s black-and-white superhero anthology. Christie Kelly is the daughter of the hero Ultiman, charged with his powers by the same meteor that changed him; her origin was drawn by Butch Guice. She later moved into Big Bang Comics, the Silver Age homage line. Read her story.

1996: Suzy Sherman, Marvel Comics

Ultragirl #1, cover-dated November 1996, by Barbara Kesel and Leonard Kirk, introduced a California teenager with a modelling career in mind who turned out to be Kree, born Tsu-Zana. After her three-issue series she returned in Civil War and Avengers: The Initiative. Read her story.

2008: Kara Zor-El of Earth-3, DC Comics

On Earth-3, DC’s inverted world, Superman’s counterpart is the tyrant Ultraman, and his cousin is Ultragirl. She first appeared in Countdown to Final Crisis #16, January 2008, from the team of Paul Dini, Tony Bedard and Keith Giffen, and got her own story in the 2021 Crime Syndicate miniseries. Read her story.

2011: Rena Sayama, ULTRAMAN

Rena Sayama is a pop idol in the ULTRAMAN manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, serialised from 2011 and later a Netflix anime. Her birth parents were not human, and she is given a suit of her own. Her claim to the name UltraGirl rests on a single fan-maintained source, and her page says so. Read her story.

2016: Ashley Kelly, Tenth Panel Comics

UltraGirl Unlimited’s own UltraGirl first appeared in September 2016, in “UltraGirl vs The Shadow, Part 1”. Ashley Kelly is a Liberty City news reporter who was taken by the alien Protectors, refused every test they set her to turn against the human race, and was given a golden power belt from their planet Ultrania. She is as imagined by Craig Carter. Read her origin.

2018: Ultra-Girl, the short film

The newest is on screen. Ultra-Girl, written and directed by Chris R. Notarile for Blinky Productions and completed in January 2018, is a twelve-minute short about a comic creator stuck on the page who is visited by his own creation, played by Lindsey Bean. Watch the film.

One name

Six characters, three decades, two languages, one name. The roster keeps them side by side, and each has a page of her own with where to read or watch her.
